Many Korean celebrities have tattoos and fans are always curious about what they mean or the story behind why they got them. This series will explore the meanings behind some of your favorite celebrities’ tattoos. MAMAMOO’s WheeIn opened the series for us. This week we’ll be covering MONSTA X MinHyuk’s whale knee tattoo. If you are a MONBEBE (MONSTA X’s fandom) it is no secret that MinHyuk absolutely loves whales. In fact, his Instagram handle (@go5rae) is the romanization for the Korean word for ‘whale’ (고래 - pronounce go-rae). He also has these whale-related photos on his account. When he shared his tattoo with fans he said that, “If they say something about it then I won’t say it’s a tattoo, I’ll say that I went to the sea and a whale suddenly hugged my knee.”

When asked what he thought about the concept of the shoot, MinHyuk shared that it includes all of the things he loves: the ocean, the deep sea, and he added that he loves whales. He shared that his dream is to go abroad and see a flock of whales in the natural sea. Combating his fear of water, he is even willing to go see whales with his scuba diving license. He also explained that he got his tattoo to cover up a scar and wanted the tattoo to be meaningful, hence he chose a whale design. MinHyuk rocked this look in shorts with his whale standing out as a focal point. More than just showing his love for whales, the tattoo actually bears a deeper meaning. In a V-Live, MinHyuk once shared, “The whale is meaningful because it belongs to me. This whale will take me anywhere that I want to go, whether it is success, health, wealth etc. Are whales big or small? They’re big, right? So, MONBEBE, my family, and anyone that I want to go wherever with can all get on the whale and ride it together.” If you look closely there are flowers/roses on the back of the whale too, adding to his message.
